In 2007, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) published the results of its project to explore the infrastructure associated with Equality and Diversity (E&D) practice across all sectors (including private, public and voluntary), with funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) EQUAL programme. The LSC and its partners worked closely with practitioners and others to identify ways in which this infrastructure could be enhanced. One of the options considered was an association and (if appropriate) a competency, qualifications and standards framework. The aim would be to support the development and career progression of E&D practitioners.
The LSC's project informed the establishment of the Institute of Equality and Diversity Practitioners.
